This stunning one of a kind piece was made noted Santo Domingo (Kewa) Artist Mary L. Tafoya.
This one is an abstract "Squash Blossom", really quite amazing and colorful. I took a lot of pictures below on different backgrounds. I take pictures outside in natural light so you can really see the colors. The "naja" part looks just like a flower with multiple inlays including red apple coral, blue & green turquoise, serpentine and white clam shell. The "blossoms" are various sizes and shapes. The pieces are suspended on a double row of blue turquoise heishi beads. The backings are dark green serpentine. weight: approx 148 grams on my scale. It's signed MLT, hallmarked and dated 7- 2008. The necklace is 24" long or with the necklace extender 28" long, with the "naja" being 2 1/2" tall by 1 3/4" wide. The blossoms starting from the "naja" up measure 1" wide by 1 1/8" tall, 1" by 1/4", 1 1/4" by 3/4", 1 1/4" by 1/2", 1 1/4" by 3/4". I'm so pleased to have met this artist! Picture below. She's a wonderful woman and her art is distinctive, unusual and creative!
Mary Tafoya
Mary Tafoya, born Mary Coriz, is one of 11 children. She learned her jewelry making techniques from her father with influence from her mother. She works from sketches and soon she creates her collector's pieces. Her unique approach in jewelry design is similar to a painter's technique. Mary draws from nature and the earth and she's wonderful at capturing color, motion and form. She's an extraordinary artist.
