The Squash Blossom Necklace is truly a fascinating and well known design. The “naja” and the squash blossom bead was introduced to the Navajo by the Spanish and later adopted by the Zuni. The crescent shaped Naja is similar to the pendants that hung from the headstalls of the Spanish silver bridles in the late 1500s and early 1600s.
For the Navajo this type of necklace has been worn for centuries not only by woman and girls but men of status.
This is a beauty! It was made by Navajo Artist Herbert Begay.
I took a lot of pictures below on different backgrounds so you can really see what you’re getting.
This Squash Blossom Necklace features polished green turquoise stones, well there’s one stone more bluish- each with a light to dark gold matrix. Each stone sets in a sawtooth bezel with a silver beaded border. The pieces are suspended on a double row of silver bench beads.
Necklace weight: approx 212 grams on my scale.
It's marked sterling and signed. It measures about 22” long with the Naja being 3” tall by 2 5/8” wide.
The stones range in size from 1 3/4” to 1 1/4”.
I placed a quarter there for scale.
