Old Pueblo Turquoise Necklace
I recently picked up some pieces from a pawn shop that was selling their unclaimed jewelry! It comes with the pawn ticket but not the info on who pawned it. That part was removed.
This is a Fabulous Old Pueblo 3 strand necklace with Joclas and "squaw wrap" finish. So no clasp there, you just put it over your head.
Traditional Joclas were originally made as earrings and were tied to a necklace when not in use. It has beautiful blue turquoise stones with olive shell heishi between the stones.
The necklace is about 30" long and the joclas are 4 1/2" long.
Weight: about 148 grams on my scale
I placed a quarter there for scale.
The literal meaning of heishi is shell and specifically refers to pieces of shell which have been drilled and ground into beads and then strung into necklaces. more information on this fascinating subject can be found on the internet
I'm very much a fan of Vintage Native American Jewelry. This jewelry has not been cleaned and will not be perfect. There's a certain amount of wear on older pieces which is to be expected and I always wonder what stories they'd have to tell in their travels through time! Some pieces are unmarked as to artist and silver content. What you see is what you get!
Sure to make a Fine addition to any collection, or a great gift! Please note: Pictures are enlarged to show detail, remember everything looks bigger on line :)
