This fascinating pendant was created by Navajo artist Valerie Cayatineto. It's a stylized version of the
Zuni Knifewing Deity. There's deep stamp work on the piece and the bail. The
center turquoise stone is a wonderful blue and the silver has a soft satin sheen and brushed look.
The bail is removable.
The Knifewing and Rainbowman first descend most likely from the Zuni Shield of the Priesthood of the Bow Clan. Knifewing is a mythological being with wings covered in flint blades. He would sweep down from the heavens and carry off beautiful Zuni maidens. Knifewing was the original war god of Zuni. The half man half eagle deity, Knifewing, is believed to bestow wisdom, strength, and courage among his people.
It's marked sterling and signed VC
It measures 2 3/8" tall, plus the large 3/4" bail, by 2 1/4" at it's widest point.
Weight: 35.1 grams on my scale
I placed a quarter there for scale.
